KAROL DEVANEY'S BLOG #2: PROBLEM SOLVING AND THE FRUSTRATION OF SHEEP FARMING

I had to look twice before I believed what I was seeing.

Three animals looked at back at me scratching my head in bemusement. A horned ewe, a strong lamb that was at least a week old and a newborn lamb.

It’s strange situations like the one above that make farming both frustrating and mentally stimulating all at the same time, situations where you have to eliminate possibilities and get to the bottom of the problem.  Farmers clothing

I looked at the funny threesome and began to think. She’s scanned for one, so one of them doesn’t belong to her. She looks fond of the strong lamb more so than the newborn one. Does the newborn one belong to another ewe? I scanned the field to find a potential mother but they were all either grazing or resting.

Eventually she turned around and revealed the answer. The last remnants of after-birth trailing out behind her. She was just after lambing. But she had a week old lamb with her.

When myself and Dad met back at the house, we figured it out over a cup of tea. Turns out she robbed the lamb off another sheep a week ago and then had her own. He laughed at how frustrated I was with the ewe. He didn’t even bat an eyelid. Scottish farmer hoodies

“She’ll rear them both” he said. He had seen it all before.

40 years in an industry must help you to take anything and everything in your stride. But I’m only guessing as I’ve only been alive for 24 altogether.
